Microdermabrasion vs. Dermaplaining

Microdermabrasion is an exfoliating procedure that renews overall skin tone and texture. It is essentially done in two ways; one is with aluminum oxide crystals and the other is done with something called diamond tip which is a special applicator with an abrasive surface to gently sand away the dead and dull outer layer of the skin to rejuvenate and reveal fresh new baby cells. In addition to it being a great exfoliation, the microdermabrasion treatment will promote circulation in your skin, stimulate collagen production and keep occasional breakouts under control.

What is Microdermabrasion? Who is an ideal candidate for Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a safe procedure for most skin types and all skin colors. A great, and safe refreshing treatment all year round.

What to expect after a Microdermabrasion treatment?

There is little to no downtime after a Microdermabrasion, you can resume your daily activities, just make sure to keep your skin hydrated with gentle products. Your skin may be a bit more sensitive so you'd want to avoid using acids, medicated topicals and be extra vigilant about wearing your sunscreen. The best part is you'll feel and notice an immediate clean, smooth, and bright complexion after a Microdermabrasion treatment. Microdermabrasion is safe during pregnancy and lactating. And all in all, a great pick-me-up treatment right before an event to maintain your glow.

Fun fact; the first Microdermabrasion machine was first invented in Italy in 1985 by two Doctors, Mattioli and brutto.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a way to exfoliate and remove surface dead skin cells along with vellus hair, or the peach fuzz leaving your skin smoother, softer, and brighter immediately. And no it will not cause your facial hair to grow back thicker. Dermaplaning also enhances the penetration of your skincare products, and allow for a smoother makeup application with a natural finish.

Who is an ideal candidate for Dermaplaning?

Similar to Microdermabrasion, Dermaplaning is a safe treatment for most skin types and all skin colors.

What to expect after a Dermaplaning procedure?

You can expect very little to no downtime after Dermaplaning. It's best to keep your skin hydrated and wait about three days before resuming your medicated topicals, acids and, retinols. Dermaplaning is also safe during pregnancy and lactating. You can count on a Dermaplaning treatment to be a great pick-me-up before an event or a vacation.

How is Dermaplaning different than shaving?

Dermaplaning exfoliates deeper than at-home razors. People like to use little razors and they think they're doing Dermaplaning, but the truth is that is not Dermaplaning!

Dermaplaning uses a surgical blade, a scalpel and its main benefit is exfoliation, and the vellus hair removal is a great side effect.

Microdermabrasion vs Dermaplaning Q and A's:

Who is not a candidate for Microdermabrasion or Dermaplaning treatments?

  • Active acne (3 or more pimples)

  • Rosacea

  • Delicate, thin skin

Can you wear makeup after a Microdermabrasion or Dermaplaning treatment?

Yes, absolutely. Just make sure your tools are clean.

Can Microdermabrasion or Dermaplaning cause acne or breakouts?

It takes up to 90 days for a pimple to surface. But a professional skin treatment can and may expedite the process for that pimple the surface. So when you notice breakouts after a facial, it's not that the facial causes your skin to break out, it just brought up to the surface what was underneath.

Can you do Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning together?

There is no need for these treatments to be done in 1 session, as they both serve the same purpose; exfoliation.

What other treatments pair well with Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning?

  • Microcurrent if you want to address aging

  • Chemical peel if you want to address dark spots or melasma

  • Microchanneling if you want to address acne scarring and fine lines

If you haven't experienced a Microdermabrasion or a Dermaplaning treatment yet, I hope you get the chance to do so. As these are both safe during summer months. But as always, I recommend consulting with your provider who may advise otherwise for your particular skin type or need.
