What Is a Cryotherapy Facial And Why Your Summer Skin Needs One

Georgia summers are not gentle. Between the heat, the humidity, the sweat, and the sun, your skin is working overtime right now — and for a lot of people, that shows up as redness, puffiness, sensitivity, or a complexion that just looks tired no matter what they do.

I have been seeing this pattern in the treatment room for weeks. Clients whose skin was doing really well in the spring are noticing that it feels more reactive. Redness is creeping back. Everything feels a little more inflamed.

There is a reason for that, and there is also a treatment that directly targets it.

This week I want to talk about cryotherapy facials, specifically the Glacial Skin Treatment we now offer at Urban Skin Care Clinic here in Roswell. I want to teach you what it actually does at the skin level, who it is a good fit for, and what the experience is like. You deserve to understand the "why" behind any treatment before you commit to it.

What Is a Cryotherapy Facial?

Cryotherapy means therapeutic use of cold. In a medical context, it has been used for decades to treat conditions ranging from warts to certain skin lesions. In the aesthetics world, it refers to the controlled application of cold temperatures to the face to calm inflammation, reduce redness, and support skin recovery.

The version we offer at Urban Skin Care Clinic is called the Glacial Skin Treatment. It is a multi-step facial that combines controlled cooling technology with active skincare serums. It is not the same as holding an ice cube to your face or using a cold roller at home. The difference is in the precision, the temperature control, and the combination of actives that are delivered alongside the cooling.

What Cold Actually Does to Your Skin

Here is the biology, simplified. When your skin is exposed to controlled cold, a few things happen:

Vasoconstriction followed by vasodilation. Cold causes blood vessels to temporarily narrow (vasoconstrict). When the skin rewarms, those vessels dilate and blood rushes back. This pumping action delivers fresh oxygen and nutrients to the tissue and is one reason skin looks brighter and more alive after a cooling treatment.

Inflammation suppression. Inflammation is the root cause of redness, puffiness, acne, and accelerated skin aging. Controlled cooling interrupts inflammatory signaling at the cellular level. A 2024 study published in peer-reviewed dermatology literature found that precision cryotherapy reduced acne lesion counts by over 90 percent at four weeks, with proposed mechanisms including improved microcirculation and modulation of the immune response. Separate research has documented the role of cryotherapy in reducing sebum evacuation and decreasing swelling in inflammatory skin conditions.

Collagen support. Chronic low-grade inflammation is one of the biggest drivers of collagen breakdown, which is why people with persistently red or reactive skin often show signs of aging earlier. Cold temperatures stimulate fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen. Over time, consistent reduction in inflammation combined with that cellular stimulation can support firmer, more resilient skin.

Puffiness reduction. The constriction of blood vessels and drainage of excess fluid is why cryotherapy is famous for deflating morning puffiness, especially around the eyes and jawline. This is also why so many clients book it before events.

I want to be clear about what the research does and does not show. The clinical evidence on cryotherapy for skin is growing, and what is well supported includes inflammation reduction and improved circulation. Claims about dramatic skin tightening or permanent reversal of aging are not well established. What I can tell you from what I see in the treatment room is that clients leave calmer, brighter, and less red, and that is consistent with what the science predicts.

Who Is a Good Candidate for the Glacial Skin Treatment?

Anyone dealing with persistent redness or rosacea. Rosacea is an inflammatory condition, and the blood vessel hyperreactivity that drives it responds very well to cooling. If summer heat has your redness flaring, this treatment can provide real relief.

Acne-prone skin. Acne has inflammation as one of its four core drivers. A treatment that interrupts that inflammatory cycle is genuinely useful in an acne management plan. The Glacial Skin Treatment is not a substitute for a comprehensive acne program, but it is a strong supportive treatment.

Sensitive or reactive skin. If traditional facials leave you irritated, red, or worse off than when you started, you likely need a treatment that calms rather than stresses your skin barrier. The Glacial Skin Treatment uses fragrance-free actives, no harsh exfoliation, and no aggressive techniques. It works with your skin, not against it.

Anyone focused on aging and prevention. If you understand that inflammation accelerates aging and you want a proactive way to manage it, this is one of the most effective options available with zero downtime. Monthly maintenance treatments are how a lot of my clients stay consistently ahead of the curve.

Anyone with an event coming up. I recommend booking the Glacial Skin Treatment one to two days before an important event. It brightens tone, reduces puffiness, and leaves your skin visibly calm with zero risk of peeling, irritation, or sensitivity the day of.

What the Treatment Is Like

Here is how The Glacial Skin Treatment Flows:

Cleanse and Prep. We start with a gentle cleanse to remove surface buildup and prepare the skin to receive active ingredients.

Cooling Infusion. Active serums are applied with controlled cooling technology. This is the step that calms inflammation and begins the brightening process. The temperature is managed precisely — it is refreshing, not uncomfortable.

Hydrating Mask. A deeply nourishing mask is applied while the cooling continues its anti-inflammatory work. This is typically when clients say they feel most relaxed.

Finishing Treatment. Lightweight moisturizer and SPF finish the session. You leave with skin that is soft, plump, and protected.

There is no peeling, no flaking, and no redness afterward. You can wear makeup immediately if you want, return to work, exercise, or go about your day with no restrictions. Most clients describe it as the most relaxing facial they have ever had.

What It Is Not

I want to be upfront about a few things, because I do not believe in overselling treatments.

Cryotherapy facials are excellent for inflammation, redness, sensitivity, and immediate brightness. They are not a replacement for laser treatments when it comes to stubborn hyperpigmentation or deeper skin concerns. They are not a substitute for a real acne program if you are dealing with active, persistent breakouts. And no single facial, no matter how good, replaces consistent at-home skincare.

What the Glacial Skin Treatment does brilliantly is calm your skin in the moment, support its recovery between other treatments, and give you a reliable, zero-downtime option for maintaining skin health without the need for a recovery window.

How It Fits Into a Broader Skin Plan

Many of my clients use the Glacial Skin Treatment as a complement to other services. It pairs especially well after laser treatments, chemical peels, or microchanneling sessions to support recovery and calm post-treatment inflammation. It is also a smart standalone choice for anyone who wants consistent results without scheduling around downtime.

If you are following an acne program with me, the Glacial Skin Treatment can be incorporated as a supportive step. We can talk through where it fits in your plan during your next visit.

Ready to Try It?

If your skin has been feeling reactive, inflamed, or just not like itself this summer, the Glacial Skin Treatment is worth putting on your radar. It is one of the most effective calming treatments I have in my toolkit, and I added it to the menu specifically because I was seeing how much my clients needed it.
