Acne, Aging, Pigmentation & Rosacea: A Woman's Guide to Treating Your Skin
Acne, aging, pigmentation, and rosacea can all show up as "my skin looks off," but each has a different cause and needs a different plan. Getting the right diagnosis first is what saves you months of guesswork and money.
If you have been cycling through influencer routines and still aren't sure what your skin needs, you're not alone. Conflicting advice is one of the biggest frustrations I hear in the treatment room. I'm Maedeh Samimi, a Licensed Aesthetician, Certified Acne Expert, and Laser Practitioner, and I founded Urban Skin Care Clinic in Roswell, Georgia, in February 2020 to help women make progress they can actually see and feel.
This guide explains what is happening in your skin with each concern, what the research supports, and where professional treatment fits. It is educational and not a medical diagnosis. Rosacea, persistent acne, and any changing spot should be checked by a dermatologist.

Acne: why you're still breaking out as an adult, and what actually works
Adult acne is common and treatable, and the most reliable treatments are still the proven medical-grade basics used consistently. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says acne affects up to 50 million Americans annuallyand that it affects up to 15% of women as adults.
Acne develops when pores clog with oil and dead skin cells, bacteria multiply, and the skin becomes inflamed. Hormonal shifts, stress, certain products, and your environment can all feed that cycle. That is why a routine that worked at 19 may fail at 32.
How we approach acne at Urban Skin Care Clinic
We start with an Acne Consultation and First Treatment, where we look at your skin history, triggers, and current products and build a customized plan.
We also offer NeoClear by Aerolase, to treat acne, which is designed to reduce oil production, calm inflammation, and target acne-causing bacteria, with no downtime. Timelines vary by person, and we'll set realistic expectations at your consultation.
If you're in Roswell, Alpharetta, or greater Atlanta and want a plan instead of guesswork, our consultation is the place to begin.
Aging: graceful aging starts with protection, then stimulation
The most useful anti-aging plan is simple: protect your skin every day, then add treatments that encourage renewal. No product or treatment stops aging, and I won't promise that. What we can do is support smoother texture, more even tone, and firmer-looking skin over time.
Fine lines, uneven tone, rough texture, and laxity come from a mix of natural changes and the cumulative effect of years outdoors.
Step 1: daily sun protection
The AAD's sunscreen guidance is to choose a product that is SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum, and water resistant. Wear it every morning, including cloudy days and drives to the office. It is the least glamorous step and the one that protects every other investment you make in your skin.
Step 2: treatments that support collagen and texture
Our Microchanneling treatment uses ProCell Therapies to create tiny microchannels and deliver peptides, growth factors, and cytokines to the skin. It is intended to improve the look of fine lines, uneven tone, and texture.
NeoSkin by Aerolase Rejuvenation and Tightening is a laser treatment that first targets water in the dermis to stimulate collagen and then, if needed, targets pigment and redness. It requires no downtime. Other supportive options include chemical peels, microcurrent, and the Glacial Skin Treatment & Cryotherapy Facial.
Results vary and are discussed realistically at your consultation. Consistency matters more than any single visit.
Pigmentation: fading dark spots and melasma without making them worse
Pigmentation responds best to a plan that protects first and treats second, because sun exposure can darken spots again after you've worked to fade them. Pigmentation includes sun spots, post-acne marks, and melasma, which are different conditions that can need different approaches.
Melasma is most common in women, most likely in people with medium to dark skin tones, and often first noticed during pregnancy or after starting birth control pills. Sun exposure can make it return or look darker, and spots often look darker in summer and lighter in winter. Melasma may fade on its own, but it can also last for years and come back.
How I approach melasma and dark spots
I always start with protection, because treating pigment without daily sun protection is like bailing water from a leaking boat. That means sunscreen every day and a wide-brimmed hat. Some people also need a prescription cream, a procedure, or both, which is a conversation for your dermatologist. As a general rule, dermatology guidance is that if a non-prescription product hasn't helped after three to six months, it's time to get it evaluated. If you are pregnant, wait until after delivery to treat melasma.
Because pigmentation can look like other skin changes, have any spot that is new, changing, or irregular checked by a dermatologist before treating it as a cosmetic concern.
How we address it
At Urban Skin Care Clinic, we customize pigment treatment to the type you have. Options include:
- NeoSkin by Aerolase for Melasma and Hyperpigmentation, a laser treatment is used for all skin types and can be paired with a peel in the same session.
- Chemical peels, remove older surface cells to reveal a smoother, more even-looking surface. One of our case studies shows a melasma client's tone and texture over about six months.
- The Brightening Oxygen Facial for a gentler complexion boost.
- The Glacial Skin Treatment & Cryotherapy Facial, a gentle, no-downtime option that brightens tone and calms redness and sensitivity. It is a good fit when your skin is reactive and you want a calmer, brighter complexion.
We do not treat pregnant clients with the laser, and we ask that people with sunburned or irritated skin wait. As with any pigment treatment, daily sunscreen between visits is what protects your results. Fall and winter, when sun intensity is lower, are a practical time to start.
Rosacea: calming redness by knowing your triggers
Rosacea is a chronic condition, so the goal is control and comfort rather than a one-time fix. Treatment can reduce discomfort and improve quality of life. It can look like persistent redness, acne-like bumps, and sensitive skin, which is why it is often mistaken for acne or a reaction to products.
Because rosacea can be confused with other conditions, a dermatologist should confirm the diagnosis.
Know your triggers
The National Rosacea Society published a patient survey in its Summer 2002 newsletter listing the most commonly reported flare triggers:
| Trigger | Patients reporting it |
| Sun exposure | 81% |
| Emotional stress | 79% |
| Hot weather | 75% |
| Wind | 57% |
| Heavy exercise | 56% |
| Alcohol | 52% |
| Spicy foods | 45% |
Triggers vary by person. A simple habit is to note what happened on days your face flushes and look for your own pattern.
Gentle care at home
- Use a fragrance-free, gentle cleanser and avoid products that sting or burn.
- Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 50 daily, since sun exposure was the top reported trigger.
- Pause aggressive scrubs, hot water, and heavy-handed exfoliation.
How we approach redness at Urban Skin Care Clinic
NeoSkin by Aerolase for Rosacea, Redness, and Veins is a laser treatment that uses deep-penetrating energy to reduce inflammation-driven redness and to treat visible veins and broken capillaries. A 20 to 25 minute session with no downtime and it feels like a warm drop of water.
