5 Homecare Mistakes That Are Stalling Your Skin Progress This Summer

By Maedeh Samimi, Licensed Aesthetician & Certified Acne Expert | Urban Skin Care Clinic

Summer has a way of throwing even the most consistent skincare routines off track. The heat, the sweat, the sunscreen reapplication — it all adds up. And if your skin has been feeling more congested, breaking out more than usual, or just not responding the way it normally does, your homecare routine might be working against you right now.

I see this happen every summer in my treatment room. Progress stalls, and when we dig in, it almost always comes back to a few common mistakes. The good news? They're fixable.

Here are five homecare habits that tend to slow down results during the warmer months — and what to do instead.

1. Skipping or Skimping on SPF

I know — this one surprises people. You'd think more sun exposure would mean more sunscreen use, but what I actually see is the opposite. Clients either skip SPF because they don't love how it feels in the heat, or they use a formula that's too heavy and ends up clogging pores.

Here's why this matters so much if you're in an active clearing phase: many of the products we use to treat acne (like retinoids, exfoliating acids, and brightening ingredients) increase your skin's sensitivity to UV. Without SPF, you're undoing a lot of the progress we're making together. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — those dark spots left behind after a breakout — gets significantly darker with sun exposure.

What to do instead: Find a lightweight, non-comedogenic SPF formulated for acne-prone skin. If you're unsure which one is right for your current protocol, ask me at your next visit. I'd rather recommend something specific for your skin than have you avoid it altogether.

2. Over-Cleansing Because of Sweat

When it's hot and humid, the instinct is to cleanse more. It feels like the right thing to do — you're sweaty, your skin feels congested, so you wash more often or reach for a stronger cleanser. But over-cleansing is one of the fastest ways to compromise your skin barrier, and a compromised barrier leads to more breakouts, more sensitivity, and slower healing.

Sweat itself isn't the villain. The problem is when sweat sits on the skin for too long mixed with sunscreen, sebum, and environmental debris. The solution isn't scrubbing harder — it's rinsing smarter.

What to do instead: If you've been sweating (after a workout, outdoor activity, or just a hot commute), a gentle rinse with lukewarm water or swiping with Sal-C toner from Face Reality Skincare is enough. Reserve your full cleanse for morning and evening as directed in your customized routine.

3. Changing Up Your Routine Because of Trends

Summer is peak content season on social media, and I completely understand the temptation. A new toner, a trending serum, a "dermatologist-approved" product that just launched — it's everywhere. And when your skin is feeling reactive or slow to clear, it's natural to wonder if something different might work faster.

But here's what I need you to know: introducing new products mid-protocol is one of the most common reasons I see progress stall. When something shifts — good or bad — I need to know which variable caused it. If you've added three new products in two weeks, we can't isolate what's helping and what's irritating.

What to do instead: Stick with your recommended protocol. If you're curious about something you've seen or read about, bring it up at your next appointment. I'm always happy to review ingredients and tell you whether something is worth adding — and when.

4. Using Heavy or Pore-Clogging Formulas "Just for Summer"

This one comes up a lot: switching to a heavier moisturizer, trying a new makeup product, or layering on a thick sunscreen because it was on sale. Sometimes it's well-intentioned — someone read that their skin needs more moisture in the AC. But not all moisturizers, sunscreens, or makeup products are compatible with acne-prone skin, and summer formulas in particular can be surprisingly comedogenic.

Acne-prone skin still needs hydration — that part is true — but the wrong formula at the wrong time can quickly undo weeks of progress.

What to do instead: Before swapping any product in your routine, check the ingredient list against a comedogenic ingredients reference, or simply run it by me. If you're finding your current moisturizer feels too heavy in the summer heat, let me know — there may be a lighter option that still supports your barrier without congesting your pores.

5. Going Inconsistent Because Summer Gets Busy

Travel. Late nights. Disrupted schedules. I get it — summer is not the season of rigorous routines for most people. But consistency is genuinely the #1 factor in whether a clearing protocol produces lasting results. Skipping your evening routine a few nights a week, forgetting your treatment serum, or washing your face with whatever's in the hotel bathroom — these things add up more than you'd expect.

Your skin doesn't take a summer break, and neither can your routine.

What to do instead: Simplify, but don't stop. I'd rather you do a streamlined 3-step routine every single night than a full 6-step routine four nights a week. When you're traveling, build a mini kit with your non-negotiables: your cleanser, your treatment product, and your SPF. If you want help identifying what's truly essential for your current phase, that's something we can map out together.

A Quick Note on Summer Skin and Your Progress

If you've been feeling like your skin is backsliding this summer, I want you to know that's really common — and it doesn't mean your protocol isn't working. Heat and humidity change how products absorb, how much sebum your skin produces, and how your barrier responds. A small adjustment to your homecare routine can make a noticeable difference.
