My Entrepreneurial Journey and Common Skincare Misconceptions

My Entrepreneur Journey and Common Skincare Misconceptions

Starting a business is never easy, but for me, it was a calling I couldn't ignore. My name is Maedeh Samimi, and I am the founder of Urban Skin Care Clinic. My journey into entrepreneurship and skincare is deeply personal, rooted in my own struggles with acne and a profound desire to help others achieve clear, radiant skin. Here’s a deeper look into my entrepreneurial journey and some common skincare misconceptions I’ve encountered along the way.

The Birth of Urban Skin Care Clinic

Urban Skin Care Clinic was established in February 2020, right before the world changed dramatically due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a clinical esthetician with over a decade of experience, I envisioned a place that bridged the gap between day spas and med spas. My goal was to offer women a space where they could see real results with their skin, whether they were struggling with acne, aging, or other skin conditions. Unlike traditional day spas where relaxation is the primary focus, my clinic prioritizes targeted treatments to address specific skin concerns.

I often joke with my clients that their relaxation is not my top priority—seeing improvements in their skin is. This philosophy drives everything we do at Urban Skin Care Clinic. Our treatments are designed with specific goals in mind, and we do not offer injectables, which are typically found in med spas. Instead, we focus on holistic treatments and skincare education.

Overcoming Challenges

Starting a business during a pandemic was an enormous challenge. I opened the clinic just six weeks before COVID-19 forced everything to shut down. With no clients and a new business, I had to close for three months. During this time, I stayed home with my daughter, who was finishing kindergarten virtually. This period was incredibly tough, but it also made me more resilient. I believe that surviving and thriving through such a challenging period has made me a stronger and more dedicated business owner.

The pandemic taught me the importance of adaptability and perseverance. Despite the shutdown, I continued to support my clients virtually, providing skincare advice and maintaining connections. This unwavering dedication helped me build a loyal client base once we could reopen.

My Skincare Philosophy

My journey into skincare began with my own battle against cystic acne in my early twenties. Frustrated by the lack of holistic solutions, I decided to become an esthetician to understand how skin functions and to help others with similar struggles. My personal experience with acne gave me a unique perspective and a deep empathy for my clients' challenges.

At Urban Skin Care Clinic, I specialize in holistic acne treatment and helping women age gracefully. My treatments include customized facials, microdermabrasion, Dermaplaning, chemical peels, microneedling, and laser treatments. Each treatment is tailored to meet the unique needs of my clients, ensuring they achieve the best possible results. I believe in a holistic approach that considers diet, lifestyle, and overall skin health, not just topical treatments.

Common Skincare Misconceptions

One of the biggest misconceptions about skincare, especially acne treatment, is the idea that you need to dry out your skin to get rid of acne. This approach often leads to compromised skin barriers, dryness, and dehydration. At Urban Skin Care Clinic, we focus on maintaining the skin's integrity while treating acne. This means nourishing and keeping the skin healthy as we work to clear it. It's a more sustainable and effective approach that prevents the cycle of temporary fixes and recurring issues.

Another misconception is that once you complete a series of treatments, your skin problems will be solved forever. Skin health, much like physical health, requires ongoing maintenance. After addressing issues like brown spots, rosacea, or acne, it's essential to follow a maintenance routine to sustain the results. Skincare is an ongoing process, not a one-time fix. Regular treatments and a consistent at-home skincare routine are crucial for maintaining healthy skin.

My Commitment to Clients

I consider myself more than just an esthetician; I am an esthetician friend to my clients. This means I am always available to offer advice and support, and I strive to create a safe space where women can ask questions and learn about their skin. My approach is hands-on and personalized. I spend considerable time with each client, understanding their unique skin needs and creating a customized treatment plan.

My podcast, "The Skin Coach in Georgia", is another way I share my knowledge and connect with a broader audience. Through the podcast, I aim to educate women about skincare, debunk myths, and provide practical advice. It's a platform where I can reach out to those who might not be able to visit the clinic but still need guidance on their skincare journey.

Treatments and Techniques at Urban Skin Care Clinic

At Urban Skin Care Clinic, we offer a variety of advanced skincare treatments designed to address different skin concerns. These include:

- Customized Facials: Tailored to each client's skin type and concerns, our facials provide deep cleansing, hydration, and rejuvenation.

- Microdermabrasion: A non-invasive procedure that exfoliates the skin to remove dead skin cells and promote new cell growth.

- Dermaplaning: A method of exfoliation that gently scrapes off the top layer of dead skin cells and fine hair for smoother, brighter skin.

- Chemical Peels: These treatments use acids to exfoliate and improve the skin’s texture and tone.

- Microneedling: A procedure that uses fine needles to create tiny punctures in the skin, stimulating collagen production and improving skin texture.

- Laser Treatments: These are used for various skin issues, including pigmentation, scars, and aging signs.

Each of these treatments is selected based on the client's specific skin needs, and I truly believe I have everything I need in my toolbox to give my clients the results they're looking for.

The Importance of Consistency and Maintenance

Consistency is key to achieving and maintaining healthy skin. Just as you wouldn't expect to achieve and maintain physical fitness with a short-term workout regimen, the same principle applies to skincare. Achieving your skin goals requires a dedicated routine and regular professional treatments. Once the initial issues are addressed, a maintenance routine is essential to keep your skin in its best condition.

I always emphasize to my clients the importance of a balanced approach that includes professional treatments, proper home care, and a healthy lifestyle. This holistic view ensures long-lasting results and overall skin health.

Personal Life and Balance

Balancing work and personal life is crucial for any entrepreneur. I find joy in exercising, spending quality time with my daughter, and engaging in activities that bring me happiness. Exercise has become a priority in my daily routine, helping me stay energized and focused. My daughter, who is ten years old, keeps me grounded and reminds me of the importance of family and downtime. We enjoy simple pleasures like going to the pool and spending time with friends.
