The Ingredients Worth Knowing: Mandelic Acid, Hypochlorous Acid, and What They Actually Do

If you have spent any time on skincare social media lately, you have probably seen azelaic acid and hypochlorous acid everywhere. Both are legitimate, well studied ingredients. What is new is how many of my Roswell, Alpharetta, and Milton clients walk in asking for them by name.
I love that. It means people are getting curious about the why behind their routine, not just collecting products because an influencer said to. So let's talk about what actually happens on your skin with these ingredients, including the one I reach for instead of azelaic acid, and why.
Why Ingredient Curiosity Is a Good Sign
For years, most of my consults started with someone showing me a shelf of products and asking, "Which of these should I keep using?" Now I am getting a different question more often: "What does this ingredient even do?"
That shift matters. When I see 10,000+ clinical hours worth of client skin, the pattern is always the same. Progress comes from understanding your own skin well enough to know why a product is in your routine, not from stacking every trending ingredient at once. Here is the question I ask myself before recommending anything: does this ingredient address a trigger you actually have, or is it just popular right now.
Mandelic Acid: My Go To Instead of Azelaic Acid
Azelaic acid gets a lot of attention, and it is a legitimate ingredient with real research behind it. It is just not something I carry or recommend in my practice. My go to alternative is mandelic acid, and once you know how it works, it is easy to see why.
Mandelic acid is a gentle alpha hydroxy acid derived from bitter almonds. Its molecule is larger than other AHAs like glycolic acid, which means it penetrates more slowly and evenly, which translates to real exfoliation with far less risk of irritation.
Here is what it is actually doing on your skin:
It exfoliates without overwhelming the barrier. Mandelic acid loosens the bonds holding dull, dead skin cells together, encouraging smoother, more even texture over time, at a gentler pace than smaller AHAs.
It targets acne causing bacteria. Mandelic acid has antibacterial properties that help reduce the bacteria involved in breakouts, which supports calmer, less inflamed skin.
It evens out tone. Mandelic acid helps fade the dark marks left behind after a breakout heals, and its larger molecule size makes it a safer choice for melanin rich skin that is more prone to post breakout discoloration.
It supports clearer pores. Between the exfoliation and the antibacterial action, mandelic acid helps keep pores from getting blocked in the first place, rather than just treating breakouts after they show up.
What I appreciate most about mandelic acid clinically is that it gives me the benefits of an exfoliating acid without the harsh, reactive response I often see with other AHAs. That makes it one of the more forgiving actives I recommend, including for clients whose skin barrier is already compromised and cannot tolerate an aggressive routine right now.
Who I recommend it for: Clients dealing with active breakouts, post breakout discoloration, uneven texture, or sensitive and melanin rich skin who need real exfoliation without a harsh reaction.
A note from my own history: When I was working through my own adult cystic acne years ago, the products that actually helped were the ones that supported my skin instead of stripping it. That is exactly why I built my practice around ingredients like mandelic acid rather than reaching for whatever is trending. Azelaic acid isn't an end all be all ingredient just because it is popular right now, and part of my job is helping you find what actually supports your skin best.
Hypochlorous Acid: Not What It Sounds Like
I get it. "Acid" and "chlorine adjacent" in the same sentence sounds intense. But hypochlorous acid, often labeled HOCl, is actually a compound your own immune cells produce naturally to fight off bacteria and calm inflammation. Skincare formulas recreate a stabilized, skin safe version of the same molecule.
Here is what the research and my own clinical experience point to:
It has antimicrobial properties. Hypochlorous acid helps reduce surface bacteria on the skin, which is useful after a workout, after a treatment in our clinic, or any time your skin has been exposed to sweat, touch, or environmental buildup throughout the day.
It supports calming and healing. It has anti inflammatory properties that make it a favorite for soothing irritated, reactive, or freshly treated skin.
It is gentle enough for compromised skin. Because it works similarly to what your own body already produces, it tends to be well tolerated even on sensitive or barrier impaired skin.
Here is the honest, transparent part I want every client to understand. Hypochlorous acid is a supportive tool, not a stand alone treatment. It will not unclog your pores, rebuild a damaged barrier, or replace your actual acne protocol. Think of it as the ingredient that calms things down and adds a layer of protection around the real work your routine and your treatments are doing, not the thing doing the real work itself.
Who I recommend it for: Clients who are actively working through a breakout, recovering from an in clinic treatment, dealing with reactive or barrier compromised skin, or who simply want a gentle way to refresh their skin midday without disrupting anything.
How I Actually Use These Two Together
In my treatment room, mandelic acid and hypochlorous acid often show up in the same client's routine, but they are doing different jobs.
Mandelic acid works to exfoliate, even tone, and support clearer pores.
Hypochlorous acid tends to show up as a spray or mist used after a workout, after sun exposure, or post treatment here in the clinic, giving the skin a calming, protective layer without adding another heavy step.
Neither one is a miracle fix, and I will always tell you that directly. What they are is two well studied, well tolerated ingredients that support the actual clinical plan we build together, whether that is an Acne Mapping Consult protocol or your maintenance routine between visits.
